Born in 1995 in Cherbourg, a small town in northern France, Alexandre Bassard grew up surrounded by Westerns and classic gangster films. Growing up far from major cultural centers allowed space to dream expansively. In a place where little seemed within immediate reach, ambition required reinvention. Not having everything at hand meant learning to build differently, to observe more closely, to imagine more boldly, and to work twice as hard to bring distant visions to life. This early sensitivity to atmosphere and environment would later become central to his work. Drawn to a broader artistic landscape, he eventually relocated to Paris in search of creative stimulation and new perspectives. It was there that his visual language began to take shape. Through his film, Bassard constructs character-driven narratives set within surreal dreamscapes, poetic yet unsettling visions that distill the emotional undercurrents of contemporary urban life, while still echoing the cinematic myths that shaped his youth. In 2020, he turned his focus more deliberately toward cinema, captivated by the possibilities of movement, rhythm, and mood unique to the medium. The interplay of light, time, and sound opened new dimensions in his storytelling, allowing his imagined worlds to unfold with greater intensity and control. In 2025, he directed his first short film, ‘How to Get Caught’, nominated for Cannes Shorts, marking a significant evolution in his practice and affirming his voice within the language of motion pictures, where European sensibility meets the enduring influence of American genre cinema.
