Em Cole is a British filmmaker inspired by people, culture, and art history. She has a Master’s in Information Experience Design from the Royal College of Art, as well as a fine arts background which gives her a unique mixed media approach. Often combining darkroom with digital techniques, and ambitious practical effects with animation, Em’s films are tactile, nostalgic, and surreal with a twist of colour and wit. In 2018, she directed her first mini short, ‘I’m your Venus’. This piece presents a frank, contemporary critique on the eroticized Image of Woman as Other in visual culture. Referencing the Renaissance Nude archetype, ‘I’m Your Venus’ uses a camera phone as a post-digital simulator of the voyeuristic gaze. Watch her come to life through the pixelated screen, and reveal the hollow illusion of female perfection in social media today. Cole’s work is a combination of art, technology, and feminism. Her often satirical filmmaking is a collage of hyper-realistic production design, optical illusions, and camera tricks.
