Johan Renck’s directorial work has defined the standards of visual language in music videos, television, film, and commercials. He gained international recognition soon after beginning his directing career, with French magazine CB News naming him “the number one director of commercials and music videos in the world.” In the commercial space, Renck has directed iconic campaigns for luxury and global brands including Chanel, Cartier, Calvin Klein, Valentino, Armani, Mercedes, and Lincoln. His campaign for Meta Quest’s Batman: Arkham Shadow generated significant industry buzz for its dark, atmospheric world-building and filmic approach to VR storytelling. His music video career includes collaborations with some of the world’s most influential artists, including Madonna, Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Robyn, and Lana Del Rey. He had a longtime partnership with David Bowie as his Creative Director, resulting in the short film Blackstar and the music video for “Lazarus.” Renck is best known for his BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe winning work on HBO’s Chernobyl. His television credits also include episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Halt and Catch Fire. He is currently helming the first few episodes of Assassin’s Creed which will be released on Netflix in 2027.
